Homework Central

Building a Future for our Kids!

After School Homework Center for Students In Grades 3 - 5

Homework Central is an after school tutoring program serving third, fourth, and fifth graders at three sites in North Central San Mateo. Each site serves approximately 20 students. Volunteer tutors help the students with their homework in small groups under the supervision of a paid staff member. Enrichment activities are offered after the student's homework is completed.

The San Mateo-Foster City Elementary School District supports Homework Central by referring students, providing instructional materials, offering training for our staff and volunteers, and by transporting the students from the schools to the center.

Homework Central staff and volunteers have regular contact with parents regarding their child's progress. Various parent educational activities are planned throughout the school year on topics chosen by parents. Parents have expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the program.

We currently receive funding from several generous sources. Among them are the Atkinson Foundation, the Peninsula Community Foundation, and the City of San Mateo. We have also received donations from individuals, civic organizations, and businesses. Samaritan House acts as our fiscal agent.

Mission Statement:

We believe that education is a critical component of a successful life in today's world. We also believe that all children have an innate capacity to learn and to achieve. For some children, this capacity is challenged by socioeconomic factors. Homework Central's goal is to mitigate these factors for "at-risk" children and their families in San Mateo by operating after-school homework centers to assist children in their learning process in an atmosphere of loving care and respect.

How Can You Help?

Volunteer to tutor once a week. We provide training and lots of support.

Donate money or school supplies. Checks may be made payable to Homework Central.
